Educational Objectives
  1. Describe clinical practice guideline development, including the methodology used to determine the INCOG (International Cognitive Rehabilitation Guidelines) for cognitive rehabilitation after traumatic brain injury.
  2. List recent guideline content in the field of neuropsychology of stroke and TBI, including the major recommendations made in the INCOG Guidelines.
  3. Apply guideline recommendations regarding strategies to address cognitive problems in ABI in relation to one’s own practice.

Abstract
This session will discuss clinical practice guidelines in stroke and TBI. Prof Jennie Ponsford will provide an overview of the methods used to develop and update the INCOG Guidelines 2.0. Highlights of the revised recommendations for conducting rehabilitation in individuals with traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic amnesia, impairments of attention, executive function, cognitive communication functions and memory will be presented, including discussion of the approaches taken, with an emphasis on assessment, goal setting, application and evaluation of outcomes of interventions in real world contexts. The use of algorithms will also be illustrated. Using the recent joint European Stroke Organisation and European Academy of Neurology guidance on post stroke cognitive impairment as an exemplar, Dr Terry Quinn will discuss the development of those guidelines and their application. Throughout the session areas where there is a need for further research will also be highlighted.

  • Jennie Ponsford, AO, BA (Hons), MA (Clin Neuropsych), PhD, MAPsS, FCCN is a Professor of Neuropsychology and Director of Clinical Programs in the School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University and Director of the Monash-Epworth Rehabilitation Research Centre at Epworth Healthcare in Melbourne. Over 42 years she has engaged in clinical work and research with individuals with mild, moderate and severe traumatic brain injury, investigating outcomes and the efficacy of many rehabilitative interventions, and publishing 2 books and over 440 journal articles and book chapters. She is Past-President of the International Neuropsychological Society (INS), International Association for the Study of Traumatic Brain Injury and the Australasian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment.
  • Dr Terry Quinn is Reader and Honorary Consultant, University of Glasgow, UK. Terry has a broad research portfolio. Research interests include trial methodology, functional/cognitive assessment and evidence synthesis. He has published over 150 papers with recent titles in BMJ, JAMA and NEJM. Terry has various editorial board positions, including coordinating editor of the Cochrane Dementia Group and Deputy Editor Age and Ageing. He is past chair of the stroke psychology SIG of the World Federation of Neuropsychology and is Scotland Lead for Ageing Research. Within University of Glasgow, Terry is vice chair of ethics and coordinates clinical academic training. He combines his research with teaching and clinical commitments.
